Chowder House at Salivar’s

photo-6

I do not think I can think of anything as sexy as being able to dine on sushi and wings at the same time. I genuinely tried to conceptualize what might be better, and failed. I also might be so dazzled by this combination because I have been deprived. I love you Montauk, but wings are not your thing. So, when we got quality wings at Chowder House it felt like I was removed from a depressing Counting Crows song into a world filled with promise.

The wings were crispy, petite, and came with a peppery blue cheese. Mili and I always love a peppery blue cheese, so this was a real treat. Monday I was dining with Dani and Kia (Kia was my first wing partner ever, and truly helped me to cultivate my passion) and they also enjoyed the blue cheese.

There is not a lot to say about these wings aside from the fact that they were prepared well and reminded me that if you never give up, you will find what you are looking for.

Getting Cripzylazy and CROXLEY BK

crox

Guys, we apologize. We have been stuck in a wingrut. Hitting up Buff’s in Newton has become our winter hang- BUT NO MORE! There is a new kid on the playground, if you live in Brooklyn.

When wingwoman Milicent had her birthday we were mulling over establishments that could handle our 8+ party. After going over many options, we realized there was only one way to celebrate the fortuitous happening of Milicent’s existence: WANNNGZZ. And to our DELIGHT Croxley Ale’s in Williamsburg Brooklyn ( wythe & kent y’all) had finally opened.

This one is going to be simple and brief, as most of the greatest truths are: 10. TEN!! 1111111111 DIX! Diez! They were PERFFFECTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. Crispy! Perfect sauce! Amazing staff! Great beer. Honestly, one cannot ask for more in a wingsesh. I will be returning next weekend, and I will report back with photos and more words.

In summation: NYC/BK Croxley’ is running game around just about everyone. BOSTON: Buff’s in Newton slays, no competition (in fact if you’ve been to Buff’s and know of somewhere comparable, please tell me).

Hot and crispy 4ever,

Alex

SIDEBAR, Downtown Crossing, Boston, MA

T’was a pre-christmas Sunday, the air danced with frost and merriment. After a rousing Uber ride where my driver told me he believed in magical numbers, spiritual awakenings, and that fate had led us to this very cab ride, I arrived at our wing location.

Logan took the lead and decided our wing session was to be at Sidebar in Boston, Boston (that’s what I call it, sorry). When I arrived I met both the Ramseyer’s feasting on a plate of beef nachos, and the bar had a very bowling alley-esque vibe. It could go either way.

I ordered a cider and it was crispy and satisfying. Small talk ensued, but it was apparent Logan was hungry and ready to wang. Our wonderful and sassy waitress brought us our first round  (WE WOULD NEVER ORDER THE ENTIRE THING SANS MILICENT. Obvi!) and it was immediately a unique situation. What? Was? This? Sauce??? It was peppery, and we LIKED IT!

SIDEBAR, DOWNTOWN: 7

THE GOOD: This sauce was extraordinary! It was similar to when your mom tells you to try something and you are like:  NO, NO, NO, and then you try it and you’re like darn, this is pretty good! The sauce was a hit. It was classic buffalo but had a zestyness (spellcheck says thats not a word, but it is NOW) that none of have us have ever encountered before.  It should be noted that the wingz were crispy and a good size and celery and blue cheese was plentiful! For the record we also tried buffalo garlic once Mili and Lucy’s glorious cousin Kiely arrived (apparently Boston luuuurves its Garlic) and that was decent as well. But the garlic dumbed down the pepper notes… 😦

THE BAD:

I was a tad bit concerned with the freshness of these wangz. I want wings to be fresh like a teenager with a new convertible. This was my only qualm. Over and out,

ALEX

Eat at Jumbo’s, Somerville, MA

ImageImage

I’ll be honest. Eat at Jumbo’s is not the sleekest title. I’ve never been enticed by an oversized wing, and felt very validated when Logan agreed with me last night. Big wings are weird. They seem fattier. They are never as crisp. They are like the school lunch of wings- they can only reach a certain quality and always seem microwaved. SO, it was to my relief to find out that Jumbo’s was more about a surplus of options, than a surplus of drumstick.

The internet regards Jumbo’s as # 3 in Boston. So, it was that title (and a house party) that drew us out to Somerville. Once we got there a few things stuck out. 1) No alcohol (.5 point deduction) 2) Friendly and helpful counter staff 3) Clean your ketchup  bottles! 4) Miley was playing. Yes. 5) SO! MANY! WING! FLAVORS! I thought I misread when it said “pterodactyl” (definitely don’t have that one in NYC…it’s teriyaki meets bbq).

Milicent and I started looking at our options. We have found our groove. I order classic hot, she picks a less traditional wing, and we order one side,  both as a pallet cleanser and something to be indicative of non-wing options and their quality.  So, in addition to hot wings we went WILD and got an extra flavor with the entire meal resulting in: 1 order hot, 1 hot garlic, 1 garlic parmesan, and an order of poutine. If you’re serving poutine, we’re gonna order it, and it better be good. Don’t put a soufflé on the menu if you can’t make a soufflé, same thang.

EAT AT JUMBO’S: 6.5

THE GOOD: HELL YEAH, we asked for them crispy and we got them crispy. Good crisp, good sized wing, pretty decent sauces. It was a bit difficult to discern that was hot and what was garlic hot, but they were both great sauces so no harm done. As for the poutine, it was divine.

THE BAD: Beer and wings are in an exclusive relationship, it is not right to keep them apart. As stated above, Jumbo’s was docked a half point for this. Sometimes a Coke rules, but on a Saturday night, no thanks.  Also, it was not that these wings were bad, they just were not AMAZING. They had all the right moves…sauce, crisp, heat, but something was lost. I think it was the meat quality. They had probably been fried twice and lost their magic the second time through. Millicent was a big fan of them, however, so let the record show her support.

NEXT UP: SIDE BAR,  but first some exercise and reflection, and other human activity

BUFF’S PUB, Newton, MA

BUFF'S PUB, Newtown, MA

Skool is out, Milicent is almost through her holiday season with Artemis Design co. (shoes & bags that are as beautiful as a plate of perfect wangz!!) and we were looking to relax, and TREAT ourselves. After Milicent decided to officially join the wing side, she came up with a great idea. She said to me: “Alex, tonight let’s get the BEST wings!” And obviously this idea was brilliant, but it posed a question. Where are the best wings? Well, according to the internet (google, yelp, weird obscure sites I’ve never looked at) Buff’s Pub was the place to go.

This place intrigued me as it pays homage to the wings native land: Buffalo, New York. I have REGRETFULLY never been, and am hoping my sister’s boyfriend will take me to the esteemed Duff’s and Anchor Bar, as he is a Buffalo man himself (good going Ariel!!) but that’s a tangent! Anyways, anyone citing authentic Buffalo wings better be able to put out.

I will start off by saying, I give Buff’s a 10/10 for hospitality. I truly believe a good wing is one made with pride, and these folks are awesome. We were seated graciously and warmly even though it was packed. The place was full and it smelled great.

We ordered an order of Hot buffalo wings, and an order of Honey Hot Buffalo (which I’d only had at croxleys until this juncture) both crispy of course.

Buff’s Pub: 9

THE GOOD: These wings were incredible!!! The sauce: perfect! The crisp: perfect! Fresh! Hot! Perfect heat level! This was the Jean George of wings. This was the Hermes birkin!! These wings were EVERYTHING you hope for in a wing.

THE BAD:
There honestly was nothing wrong about these wings. I have never said that before, and it makes me mildly uncomfortable. I have not given them a 10 YET because I have never been to Buffalo and I need to see how they stack up. But seriously, this place holds current BEST WING TITLE. The internet was right for once.

I am on the left looking a bit overtired, and Mili looks like a hot wing model (get it!?!?!)

Friends 4 LIFE

Friends 4 LIFE

I can’t even tell you how rewarding this text message was. It was better than when the love of your life texts you asking for a second date.

NOW it should be noted that Milicent spells her name with ONE L, she is my co-winger and thus needs to be properly addressed and identified.

After our Whiskey’s date, Mili signed on to be my wing-mate and I could not be happier. Everyone needs someone to bounce ideas off of, someone with a different palate, and winging is best when done in the company of a friend and a great beer.

I ❤ you Mili.

Whiskeys, Boston

New city, new wing terrain. After moving from the magnificent NYC I took a break from wings. When I moved here I had none of the things that make for a great wing adventure. No wing buddies, no tried and true wing go-tos, and a lack of motivation. But after visiting NYC and dining on some of my favorite wings at Croxleys Ale House, avenue B…. My wing spark was reignited. I communicated my need for wings to my new friends, and was immediately embraced. My friend’s husband’s Lanyon and Logan told me there were good wings to be had.

That very next Sunday, I dragged myself out of one of my worst hangovers to date, and Milicent and I trudged through the snow, a place called Whiskeys was our destination.

WHISKEYS: 5

We ordered 2 orders of their classic wings. As usual we requested that they were crispy.

THE GOOD:

The sauce was great. Perfect tang, not too soupy, not too thick. Almost a little too much heat for a classic wing, but it was cold outside and heat revs the metabolism! The crisp factor was there intially but faltered and gave way mid wing-session.

THE BAD:

They were not fresh. These wings had been sitting for a few moments before we got them. This is tragic because the place was not busy. The delay caused the wings sauce to congeal a tad, and to become lackluster as their crisp was lost due to the congealed sauce.
